Greetings:I would like to first take a moment to welcome you to Salem and to welcome back those who may have been here to enjoy the first International Youth Environmental Summit in 1997. Welcome, and I wish I were able to be with you. Unfortunately, votes have kept me in Washington.
Often in this day and age we hear about "global economics" and "global politics," indeed it seems as if everything we once thought was purely national is now a part of something larger and international. However, even today we rarely, if ever, see the expression "global education." Indeed, it is the 21st Century Schoolhouse's commitment and innovation to using the emerging tools of globalization as a positive force in creating "global education" which makes your work here over the past week truly "cutting edge." Using the Internet to link students and teachers from all across the world in the service of promoting global environmental and health improvements is a worthy and necessary goal for today's youth.
By working so closely with each other and respected institutions like the Centers for Disease Control, I am certain that you have discovered how collaboration can lead to even greater success than just simply unbridled competition. I am very proud of all that you have achieved and hopeful for all that you will achieve with the skills the 21st Century Schoolhouse has given you and will give students here when the 21st Century Schoolhouse opens in Salem later this year.
As a former educator, I know the dedication and commitment involved in giving students the necessary skills they will need to become knowledgeable leaders in the 21st century. The 21st Century Schoolhouse provides the perfect opportunity for today's youngsters to continue their successes well into the future.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Darlene Hooley
