Using IRC for Chats

In order to set up online chats between the schools, we will connect to the
armory.dal.net IRC server.

We can do this by using two different programs.

    MIRC

    If you are using a PC computer with WINDOWS, then MIRC is probably the best program to use.

    You can download MIRC for WIN 95 here.

    If you do not have WIN 95 and are still using WIN 3.11, then you can download a version of MIRC for WIN 3.11 at
    http://www.mirc.com/get.html

    (make sure you choose the version for Win 3.x)

    After you have downloaded the MIRC installation file, simply open this file and it will install itself.

    After setting up MIRC you will have to enter certain information in the opening setup screen -

    full name, email address, nickname, alternative nickname

    The nickname is the name you will be known by on IRC. You can always change this nickname while using MIRC. Usually, if more than one student is using the same computer for IRC, they will change the nickname to their own nickname when they take their place at the keyboard.

    The reason they ask you for an alternative nickname is that your nickname may already be taken by someone who is on IRC. Two people cannot be on IRC with the same nickname at the same time. If someone else is on with the nickname that you are using, the IRC server will try your alternative nickname, and if this nickname is in use also, you will be asked to change your nickname within 30 seconds or you will be kicked off.

    Holding Meetings

    We will connect to IRC using the

    armory.dal.net

    IRC server. In order to connect to it, go to your IRC server list under FILE -> SETUP, choose ADD, enter this address and choose ADD again. This server will then appear in your list of servers and you can connect to it each time you enter MIRC.

    We will meet on the channel #gs21virtual.

    You are usually asked which channel you want to join after you connect to IRC. Simply type in -

    gs21virtual

    in the box.

    You can also join the channel by typing -

    /join #gs21virtual

    after you connect.
