Recently, four students from Warnbro Community High School were invited to
a breakfast seminar to discuss the problem we have in our oceans. This morning began with a guest speaker, Dr. Pat Hutchinson, who is a well-known marine researcher. She explained t
o us that our marine environment is destroyed in many ways and that almost everything we do has an impact on it.
It is hard to regenerate the marine environment after it has been destroyed for many reasons, some of which include lack of funding and resources and general lack of public awareness. There is a lot that is unknown about the ocean, which makes it harder t
o regenerate it. The best cure for something like this is prevention.
Sea pollution is a big problem all over the world and is caused directly and indirectly. Often people don't think about the results of their actions. Ballast water is a big problem because it introduces species, which are not native to the environment and
may have a negative effect on the local species and the environment because they aren't prepared for it.
Pollution of the marine environment has caused a major problem in the form of algal bloom in the Mandurah Estuary. This was caused mainly by the fertilizers that get washed into the estuary for the surrounding properties. This is a hard problem to solve b
ecause the algae grows and spreads to other areas very rapidly.
There are many other problems in the Australian waters: for example, the degeneration of the Great Barrier Reef through the overuse and exploitation and the problems of over-fishing. To tell you about them all would take up too much time and space so I wi
ll leave you here.
