SALEM - Answers to the environment's most vexing questions will be displayed in Salem through Friday.

It is the third annual exhibit prepared by students of South Salem High School's Environmental Issues course. For the display, the students consider 25 environmental issues and show current research and solutions.

The display will open at 7 p.m. today with a talk by State Rep. Bryan Johnston, D-Salem, in the ballroom of the Reed Opera House, 189 Liberty St. SE, Salem. The exhibit is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday.

The issues in "Global Mirage: A Look at How Environmental Perspectives are Changing" include those that will affect local residents, the nation and the global community, said teachers Andrew Goldstein and Molly Kellar.

The problems include future cities, alternative energy, infectious diseases, atmospheric stability, wetland and forest conservation, ocean resources, recycling and the impact of food and chemicals on health.

More than 100 students of the high school are in the Environmental Issues course.

Among its goals are local action, community education, and international collaboration.

Six high schools in Salem, South Africa, Israel, Japan, Australia and Brazil have hooked up via the Internet to address environmental challenges of the future.

Student delegations from each school will participate in a 10-day International Youth Environmental Summit in Salem in September.
